Sarah - Monatrice

After witnessing a home birth in 2007, I knew that I wanted to support women and their families during pregnancy and birth. I completed my DONA training and began my doula career shortly after. I've been a doula since March 2008, and my love for serving women and families has continued to grow. I graduated from Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery with high honors in 2016 and am now a Certified Professional Midwife licensed to practice midwifery in California. I love being able to use my skills as a midwife to benefit hospital birthing families.  It is such a privilege to care for families during this transformative time. I truly enjoy helping woman have safe and satisfying birth experiences.

Midwife + Doula = Monatrice! Many people lump a midwife and doula together, but there is a difference! A midwife offers medical care and is licensed by the medical board. A doula does not offer medical care or advice, but instead comfort, reassurance, tips and tricks. A monatrice is BOTH. I have the training and licensure as a midwife and am a certified doula. After serving women in birth centers and home setting as midwife for several years, I decided to focus my skills in helping hospital birthing families as a doula monatrice. As a monatrice, I can check baby's heartbeat, moms vital signs and cervical dilation while laboring at home. Then when we arrive at the hospital, I switch gears into a non-medical role (although I can still share tips and tricks from a midwives perspective, of course)!
